It’s time for another episode of the Locked on Women’s Basketball podcast. This episode features host Missy Heidrick who joins The Next‘s West Coast Conference correspondent Matthew Walter to talk about all things WCC. Can Lisa Fortier and Gonzaga live up to their preseason favorite billing?
Matthew talks about where BYU stands with a new coaching change:
“Yeah, after having probably one of the most successful seasons in school history. I really think they’re going to take a big step backward. You look at it, you graduate three starters, you lose another starter in Shaylee Gonzales, the Conference Player of the Year from a year ago, to the transfer portal and she joins Texas.
But now you’re asking the brand new head coach with non-college coaching experience who has coaching experience at the AAU and high school level to try to replace the winningest coach in school history in Jeff Judkins, who by the way, just took you to your best season; you finished as high as you finished you were ranked you got a really high seat in the NCAA tournament.”
Matthew talks about Gonzaga and the key players for this season:
“So they are led by three players who were all-conference preseason selections and it starts in the backcourt with the Truong twins Kayleigh and Kaylynne Truong, two guards out of Houston, Texas. Kayleigh started the whole year Kaylynne came off the bench for Gonzaga last year. I would expect, with the departures Gonzaga has had, that they will both jump right into that starting lineup and they play so well with each other; scoring guards can set up their teammates score all three levels; they have really high basketball IQ. And they play well together. They’re really dynamic.
And then the next star is Yvonne Ejim, who was last year’s WCC Six Player of the Year. Now she’s probably going to start because they graduated both of their starting frontcourt players.”
