On the latest episode of Locked On Women’s Basketball, host Natalie Heavren sits down with The Next’s Scott Mammoser to discuss all things Paris. Mammoser, who reports live from the Olympics, talks with Heavren about what fans can expect from Team USA. They get listeners up to speed on the 5-5 games, the 3-3 games, and more.
Heavren and Mammoser open the conversation with a discussion about Team USA’s recent loss to the WNBA all-stars. What could Team USA do to be more competitive? Per Mammoser, lots of things. He recaps a conversation with head coach Cheryl Reeve, who says they “need to be more aggressive on transition and perimeter.” They also get “so used to being in the same place at the same time with their regular teams,” Mammoser says, from his conversation with Reeve. “And now they have to change that up when they’re with a different group of players.”
Heavren and Mammoser move on to discussing the 3-3 competition. Heavren asks Mammoser how important it is that there is some veteran leadership returning to the 3-3 team. “It’s very important,” Mammoser says. “A lot of the other teams we are facing have been playing one another regularly for the past two World Cups, if not the Olympics, so they’re very familiar with the show … so it’s highly important to have that chemistry.”
Heavren and Mammoser wrap things up by discussing topics outside of basketball. When Heavren asks Mammoser what he’s most excited for outside of the tournament, Mammoser has a quick answer. “I’m a real history buff,” Mammoser says, but he also knows how he’s going to eat. “When I travel to Europe, I mostly have the same meal,” he says. “I go to the supermarket, get a piece of fruit, yogurt, and a pastry. If you want to budget your travels, that’s a good meal.”
