It’s time for another episode of Locked On Women’s Basketball. Host Howard Megdal is joined by Notre Dame forward Liatu King, who is averaging a double-double for the Fighting Irish.
They started their conversation with her defense and specifically her role as the team’s top rebounder, averaging 10.9 per game. That stat also puts her among the nation’s leaders ranking 10th in NCAA Division I basketball.
“When I entered the portal and I had conversations with coach [Niele] Ivey, one of the main things they talked about was rebounding and I knew that was something I could bring to the team,” King said. “This team doesn’t need me to do anything spectacular, I just need to do what I’ve always been doing and that’s making hustle plays and rebounding.”
King, who is a Washington D.C. native, spent her first four collegiate seasons at Pittsburgh and transferred to Notre Dame as a graduate student. In her final year with the Panthers, she averaged a career-high 18.7 points and 10.3 rebounds on her way to being named the ACC’s Most Improved Player.
“Change is scary, no one wants to do it, but I think to get to where you want to go to become a better player, it has to be inevitable,” King said. “I’m a part of something special. And this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to be able to play in March. I wanted to be able to go deep in the tournament”
Now, King, Ivey and the Fighting Irish turn their sights to the ACC Tournament where they will be a No. 2 seed after winning a share of the regular-season title.
