On Feb. 24, University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy point guard Grace Beyer dropped 32 points in an 80-56 win over Hannibal-LaGrange. The fifth-year senior needed 14 points to surpass the NAIA record of 3,855 points, which was set by Miriam Walker-Samuels of Claflin from 1987-1990. 4 ½ minutes into the second quarter, Beyer hit a 3-pointer — reaching 16 points and breaking Samuel’s record and moving up to fifth place in college basketball history.
Beyer has a season average of 34.5 points and in order to pass the women’s all-college scoring record of 4,061 points which was set by Peal Moore from 1975-1979 (3,884 of those points at Francis Marion and 177 at Anderson Junior College), she’d need to play in six postseason games.
John Pierce, who played at Lipscomb from 1990 to ‘94 currently holds the overall all-college record for both men and women with 4,230 points.
Earlier this month, the same night Iowa’s Caitlin Clark became the NCAA women’s career scoring leader, Beyer scored forty points in a game against Cottey College. This set her career total to 3,842 points, 249 ahead of Clark at the time. In the matchup against Nebraska, Clark dropped a career-high 49 points and shot 16-for-31 from the field and banked 8 free throws.
The point guard shot 9-of-23 Saturday and had six 3-pointers and went 8-for-8 at the line. Beyer also had four rebounds and six assists. Teammates Samantha Matthews scored 23 points and Elizabeth Alanach scored 22 points. The squad made 20 of 48 3-pointers attempted in the game. Hannibal-LaGrange’s Lesly Ivy led her team with 26 points.
